2013 – A YEAR of savings

January 4, 2013 By Micki Leave a Comment

We all do it – Say we’re going to save money for the year and most of us fail. If you haven’t tried this maybe this year is a good year to try new things!
You’ve probably already heard of it, maybe not, but I’m going to tell you of a way to help you save some MONEY this year (and maybe every year after this)!!
Here’s how:

There are 52 weeks in a year. If you put aside the amount of money as the number of the week, you could have put aside $1,378 for ONE YEAR!

It’s called the 52 Week Money Challenge:

This is goal, however, we all know that surprises show up when we least expect them to. So even if you saved for half the year; $351 can come in handy in your time of need.

Try it! What would you have to loose? Definitely not MONEY!

Thank you The Survival Mom

Ranch Saltine Crackers with a KICK!

January 1, 2013 By Micki Leave a Comment

These are so affordable to make and SUPER delicious! Chances are you have most items in your house right now!

Ingredients:

  • 1 box of Saltine crackers
  • 1 packet of Ranch dressing (powdered mix)
  • 1-2 tablespoons Red Pepper flakes (use more or less depending on how spicy you like it!)
  • 1 1/4 cups oil

Directions:

  • Mix the Ranch Dressing and Red Pepper Flakes together. (I just open the ranch and put the Red pepper flakes right in)
  • Dump half the crackers into a large bowl, pour about half the oil on them and gently mix up a bit to coat crackers. Put remainder of crackers in bowl, pour the rest of the oil on, and again mix gently.
  • Slowly sprinkle the ranch mixture onto the crackers, gently stirring to coat them all as you add more.
  • Dump out on cookie sheet and Bake at 250 for 5-10 minutes.
  • Enjoy!

Notes:

The taste is a little different, but you could also do this recipe with Oyster Crackers. (Instead of mixing in a bowl, you could shake them up in a bag. Unfortunately I found bag mixing with the saltines did not go so well, many broke)

If you do not like the heat, completely leave the red pepper flakes out.

New Years Eve Tradition! Money Under the Doormat

December 29, 2012 By Micki 1 Comment

$$ Money Under the Doormat $$

We all have some New Years Traditions we do every year. This is one I learned from my Grandma.

Every New Years Eve when I was younger, My parents would have a “Get Together” at our house, so that meant my sister and I got to spend the night with my grandparents. My Grandma  had a few odd traditions, Like eating Pickled Herring at Midnight; This one I did not partake in, lol. One that I do still carry on today though, is putting Money under the doormat outside before the New Year rings in.

I remember vividly my Grandma  pulling out her coin purse and fumbling around in it to find a quarter, and then together we would step outside and put it under the doormat before the clock struck 12. The next morning, you bring the quarter back in during the New Year.

It is said doing this, will insure that you have a financially comfortable New Year in your household. (Possibly a German tradition?)

We have continued this tradition on with our son, and he has taken it one step further. He puts out one quarter, one dime, one nickel, and one penny!

I of course know this is a “Tradition” that very possibly does not work, but isn’t carrying on fun traditions like this generation to generation what family is all about?

Keeping Black Jeans Black

December 26, 2012 By Micki Leave a Comment

How to keep Black Jeans from fading:

ALWAYS start with washing your pair of black jeans in cold water with about a cup of white vinegar.  The vinegar sets the color, similar to coloring old fashioned “Easter Eggs”.

Keeping the color:

ALWAYS wash your jeans in Cheer (for dark colors) OR Woolite!

Remember: LESS is MORE!

Detergents can be harsh to the fabric over time, use the least amount needed.

When you dry them:

Turn them inside out & dry on a low setting and only dry for about 30 minutes. If they are still damp, just hang to dry.

Reusing Wrapping Paper

December 24, 2012 By Micki Leave a Comment

Reusing Wrapping Paper

I remember all to well as a child, my Aunt yelling out at Christmas as we opened our presents, “I will keep that wrapping paper” or “Save that Bow!” Back in the day, I used to chuckle to myself thinking this was crazy, but now as I have gotten older, I have found she had the right idea!

Most wrapping paper can be recycled at the curb, but the pretty foiled, glittered, or even tissue paper you can not put out to the curb! Instead of filling our landfills that are already overflowing, why not reuse these gently used beauties! You will also save money on next year’s Christmas wrapping.

Re-Wrap

Any wrapping paper that has NOT been torn to shreds, simply roll back onto a wrapping paper tube. Does your paper have creases? NO WORRIES, put your iron on a low setting and do a quick swipe over the non patterned side. The creases will come right up!

Donate It

Most Art Teachers would be more then happy to take your gently used wrapping paper, bows, ribbons, etc. Little ones LOVE decorating art projects with colorful items. (Of course do not just hand the teacher a bag full of crumpled up tape filled paper. Cut off any tape areas, run a quick iron over them and either fold or wrap around a tube.)

Craft

Wrapping paper is PERFECT for Scrap booking, making paper beads, and more! Many crafter’s use left over wrapping paper for decoupage.

Wrap the Box to reuse over and OVER

Most of us reuse Christmas boxes. Why not take that left over Christmas paper, wrap the upper and lower part of the Christmas box for next years gifts! This way next year, the receiver does not have to rip open the gift, they simply lift the top off the box to view their present. You can reuse these boxes over and over again.

Sell it!

Yes, you heard me right, SELL IT! The more ornate wrapping paper crafter’s will buy! Give it a shot on ebay or craigslist.

Make Christmas Tags

Attach the wrapping paper to some card stock paper. Make gift tags for your presents for next years. You can elaborate them by adding glitter, ribbons, add a whole punch for attaching to gifts and more. Use your imagination.

Wrap your Ornaments

Extra crumpled wrapping paper works GREAT for wrapping and storing those delicate Christmas ornaments that you will be storing away until next year.

Packing and Shipping Filler

If you do shipping through out the year, crumpled up Christmas paper makes a perfect cushion for fragile items that you need to ship!

Removing Salt from Leather Shoes

December 24, 2012 By Micki Leave a Comment

Removing Salt from Leather Shoes

Is there anything more frustrating then getting an expensive pair of leather shoes or boots and then they get ruined by the winter salt on the sidewalks? Living in Wisconsin, I know all too well how irritating this can be! Here are some tips to help restore your shoes and make them good as new. (Please note: doing this RIGHT AWAY when you notice the salt stain is important! You will probably have to treat your shoes numerous times through the winter season. The longer you leave the salt on your footwear, the more damage it will do)

Soft Leather

White Vinegar

1) Carefully examine them for any visible salt grains, and brush away.

2) Mix two parts of water, to one part of white vinegar. (I usually mix a 1/4 cup white vinegar with 1/2 cup water)

3) Working in small sections from the outside to the inside of the stain, Dip paper toweling into the solution and gently rub the solution onto the salt stained area. Once any salt residue in that area appears to be gone, take a soft cloth and buff that area dry. Continue working in small areas on the rest of the boot. Let the boots dry for at least an hour, and then check if there are any areas you need to redo.

4) Polish and use a leather treatment on your footwear ASAP. This will help add an additional barrier, and also strengthen the leather. I recommend Saddle Soap to do an overall soft leather cleaning.

★ IF your soft leather is extremely salt stained, you can clean the entire shoe first with a lemon cut in half. Let it sit and dry, and then wipe them off with a soft wet rag.

Suede

You can not treat suede as you would soft leather. Wet cleaning treatments that you use on Soft Leather are not good for suede; it will pull the dye out of the footwear.

1) Carefully examine them for any visible salt grains, and brush away. (Make sure they are COMPLETELY DRY)

2) Rub quickly with a knead-able eraser. (In most kids art cases) or VERY LIGHTLY sand away stains with an emery board.

3) If your suede is matted down, rub vigorously with a soft/clean toothbrush. (For severely matted areas, hold over a steaming kettle. The steam will help loosen the mat. BE CAREFUL not to burn yourself with the steam.)

4) IF this does not bring your salt stain up, YOU CAN gently dab some of the vinegar mixture above on the stain, BUT before buffing the suede back up, make sure it has completely dried.

Extra Tips for Leather:

★ I can not emphasize enough HOW IMPORTANT it is during the weather months to treat your soft leather or suede WEEKLY if you live in a winter climate. Even with pre treatment you still may need to clean up the occasional salt stain when it occurs, but not  nearly as much if you keep your footwear treated.

★ To help keep leather footwear in shape, Especially when wet, make sure to use a shoe tree.

★ Before the winter season, treat all leather with water-repellent coating, like GHRI-tested Protect-all from Kiwi. It works on both suede and leather. (You can treat weekly)

★ If you will not be wearing your suede footwear for awhile, wrap them in tissue paper in a shoe box and store away from light and excessive humidity.
