New Years Eve Tradition! Money Under the Doormat

December 29, 2012 By Micki 1 Comment

$$ Money Under the Doormat $$

We all have some New Years Traditions we do every year. This is one I learned from my Grandma.

Every New Years Eve when I was younger, My parents would have a “Get Together” at our house, so that meant my sister and I got to spend the night with my grandparents. My Grandma  had a few odd traditions, Like eating Pickled Herring at Midnight; This one I did not partake in, lol. One that I do still carry on today though, is putting Money under the doormat outside before the New Year rings in.

I remember vividly my Grandma  pulling out her coin purse and fumbling around in it to find a quarter, and then together we would step outside and put it under the doormat before the clock struck 12. The next morning, you bring the quarter back in during the New Year.

It is said doing this, will insure that you have a financially comfortable New Year in your household. (Possibly a German tradition?)

We have continued this tradition on with our son, and he has taken it one step further. He puts out one quarter, one dime, one nickel, and one penny!

I of course know this is a “Tradition” that very possibly does not work, but isn’t carrying on fun traditions like this generation to generation what family is all about?

Fisher Price and House Party, two AMAZING Companies!!

September 24, 2012 By Micki Leave a Comment

Admin Sarah here, and I wanted to take the time to mention how AMAZING House Party is, and how generous their sponsors are. About a month ago, I was accepted for the Fisher Price Playdate House Party.

THE PARTY PACK
I got an email stating that my Party Pack was on its way. Imagine my surprise when a very large, very heavy box shows up, packed to the brim with OVER $350 worth of toys!! I was just blown away, they went above and beyond anything I had imagined. They had also shipped out the Party Favors, for me to give to the guests, and even those were very generous. The guests each got a coloring book, a Wheelies vehicle, a dvd, a cd, a $5 off $25 coupon, and more. They even sent the gift bags and tissue paper!! My daughter, because of her age(26 months), received the Toddler pack. This included the Disney Princess Little People Songs Palace, along with two Figure packs, the Little People Wheelies Loops N Swoops Amusement Park, and the Servin Surprises Kitchen & Table set, along with 5 Accessories, including the Tea Party Set, the High Chair Set, the Birthday Set, the Ice Cream Party Set, and the Barbeque Set. On top of all this, they also sent 14 AA batteries!! I was just astounded at how much they sent, and amazed that they would be so generous!!

MY HOUSEPARTY
So this past Saturday, we had our Party, and the kids LOVED it!! My boys, 5 and 7, were playing with the Wheelies set all day, they loved the full loop the cars made going down the steep slide. My daughter and her friends played with the Princess Castle, which I think is amazing, when you set a Princess on the pedastal and push down, she says her name, a phrase from her movie, and then sings part of a song from the movie! My favorite is Ariel, who sings “Part of that World”, can’t wait for The Little Mermaid to come out of the vault in Fall of 2013 so I can buy it in Bluray! My nephew, who just turned 1, mostly played with the Wheelies cars, he was too cute, driving them around the bottom of the Rampway and Amusement Park, making his little motor sounds. They were not too interested with the Kitchen, but I have no doubt that as my daughter gets older, she will definitely play with it. It was so cute to see all these kids crammed into my daughters’ bedroom with all the toys. We have been Fisher Price customers for a long time, so on top of the 2 Little People sets they sent, we set up a “village” and added them to my daughters’ Castle, Zoo, Farm, House, and Rampway that she got for her 2nd Birthday.

(Me, right, with my mom and little sister)                                         (Me, right, with my little sister)

GREAT MEMORIES
When I was little, my parents invested in all of the Little People sets, and my sister and I would be out on the living room floor bright and early setting up our village, we played with those sets for hours!! When she was first learning to talk, she referred to them as Peepios, and the name stuck! Our parents would lay down on the floor and play with us, driving the little cars around our town, taking kids to school, the park, the swimming pool, the grocery store, etc, and we were so happy that they were playing with us!

A MILLION THANK YOU’S
So I want to thank House Party and Fisher Price, your generosity truly amazed me, and I am absolutely thrilled that I get to carry on a great part of my childhood, and repeat the playtime with my children. I am almost 30, and still enjoy those “Peepios” just as much as I did when I was 5!!

“Give Me Five!”

September 18, 2012 By Micki Leave a Comment

“Give Me Five!”

So, I am probably the last person on the planet or on the internet to hear about this, but just in case I’m not I thought I would share a simple money-saving idea on to everyone.

While sitting at football practice with the other football moms tonight I overheard one of the moms say, “Yup I saved $70 this week already.”  Immediately my radar ears went up and I asked her to repeat how she did it because up to that point I wasn’t paying attention…here is what she said.

She said that she carries cash to pay for everyday items and that any time she paid for something and received a $5 bill back she would not spend it.  She would put it in a separate part of her wallet and then when she has 20 of the $5 dollar bills she will go to the bank to deposit that into a savings account.  She said at first it was tough, because she had gone to get a quick drink at Sonic paid with a $20 and the car hop had given her 3 five dollar bills.  She admitted that she asked for a ten, because she had other things she “wanted” to use that money for rather then “needed”.  So she put the 3 fives in their separate space and went on with her errands.  She has decided to do this for her family to save for an upcoming vacation.

I thought this was an interesting, fun, and unique way to save money.   While it does take some discipline to get into the routine, it could add up quickly especially if you transfer the money from a savings account to a higher interest rate account such as a CD.  I also thought it might be a good way for kids to learn to save money maybe by starting this with quarters and going up from there.

Happy Saving!  If you decide to give this a try please feel free to comment and let us know how much you saved. 🙂

St. Nick – The night of December 5th

November 22, 2011 By Micki 6 Comments

Do you do the St. Nick Tradition?

Does your family celebrate the St. Nick Tradition? I assumed everyone’s did, but I am finding out many do not know about him, especially in the United States, so I just wanted to take a second to explain in my own words.

St. Nick visiting is an old German Tradition my Mother always did for us kids, even as we got older. On the Eve of December 5th, Us kids would put outside our bedroom door our shoe or boot, or hang our Christmas Stocking so St. Nick could fill it with goodies!  This usually included a nice little note letting us know if we had been Naughty or Nice and what we needed to improve on. (Of course always signed St.Nick) If you have been extra naughty, you would not get any goodies, just a lump of coal. (And yes, I had a few years of Coal)

I think St. Nick is a great thing to start as a family tradition for a few reasons. The first being, Kids get sooooo excited for the holidays, it is a nice way to settle them down a bit with just a few little goodies and trinkets. It is also a nice tradition they will carry on with their family. My grandmother did it, my mother did it, and I also did this for our son. It is a great way to help build your Childs self esteem, When you write the letter, of course there will be a few “Need to improves” on there, but you can sandwich these comments with praise and appreciation for wonderful things they have done through out the year! Playing nice with their siblings, sharing, helping out around the house, etc.

Another idea I have heard others suggest is making December 5th a family get together, Instead of using their shoes or boots, pick up some of the plain old Red and White Christmas stockings and decorate them as a family event that night, then have them hang them out for St. Nick to fill and leave his special little note in!

Now…Who has heard about the Christmas Pickle? Oh the FUN we have with that on Christmas Morning when it is hidden in the Christmas Tree!
