Candy Corn Jello Shots (For Adults)

September 16, 2013 By Micki Leave a Comment

Candy Corn Jello Shots

Above is a photo of the Candy Corn Jello Shots Admin. Erica made last year during Football Season.

Ingredients:
10 oranges
1 box orange jello
1 can coconut milk
1 envelope Knox geletin
1/4 cup sugar
1 bottle Pinnacle whipped cream flavored vodka

Directions:

1. Prepare oranges by cutting them in halves and hollowing out the peel. This may sound easier than it is. The trick is to take a paring knife and score around the insides to carefully loosen the citrus, then spoon it out. Arrange the hollowed out orange bowls on a cookie sheet (securely upright) or in a cupcake pan.

Orange Layer
2. Boil one cup of water then stir in packet of orange jello. When dissolved slowly add one cup of vodka and stir. Pour orange mixture into the orange peels, filling half way. Let refrigerated for at least 2-3 hours or until firm.

White Layer
3. Pour 1/2 a cup of water and 1/2 a cup of coconut milk into a sauce pan and then sprinkle1 packet of Knox gelatin on top. Let is sit for one minute, then turn on medium heat and stir until dissolved. Add 1/4 cup sugar and heat until dissolved.

Turn off the heat and wait until the mixture is just warm and then add 1/2 a cup of vodka. Pour into oranges on top of orange jello layer.

4. Let refrigerate overnight.

5. Quarter the halves with a sharp knife, then cut those halves in half again.

Keep Your Apples From Browning!

September 11, 2013 By Micki Leave a Comment

Autumn has arrived and it’s time to enjoy those delicious, fresh apples! But, the worst thing is when you cut an apple and it browns right away.  Here are a couple really simple ways to keep your apples from browning:

  • Lemon juice.  You can use either freshly squeezed or  lemon juice.  You can add the lemon juice right to the cut side of the apple simply tossing them in a bowl with a little bit of the lemon juice. This method will give your apple a slightly lemon taste.  Rinse after you are done with the lemon juice.
  • Carbonated drinks. You can drop your apples in a bowl of your chosen carbonated drink for around 5 minutes, but no loner.  After that is finished, go ahead and drain the apples and rinse with cool water.
  • Plastic wrap. How incredibly simple! This method just keeps the air away from the apple, preventing it from browning.  Wrap the plastic wrap as tight as possible to keep it fresh for much longer!
  • Choose Wisely! Did you know that certain types of apples brown faster than others? If you’re planning a certain dessert or would like them cut up and have them out for awhile, remember that Granny Smith brown the least and Red Delicious browned the fastest!
  • Smart Storage! The best way to store your cut apples is to place them directly in a sealed bag and ensure that all of the air is out of the bag before you close it and set them in your refrigerator until ready to serve!

Make Your Own Busy Container For Kids!

September 1, 2013 By Micki Leave a Comment

Make Your Own Busy Container For Kids!

You’ve seen them in stores, the over priced busy containers full of little objects for kids to find, right? My son was looking at them in the store the other day and I realized how completely simple it would be to make my own!  Just as fun for them, and extremely inexpensive for me!

Items Needed:

(1) Empty container – I used an empty Apple Juice plastic container, washed & dried completely.
(1) Box of white rice
Anything small around your house that you aren’t using, small bouncy balls, pieces of puzzle that have lost their mates, hair bands, jacks, broken pieces of crayon, dried beans, you can use anything!

Instructions:

Take your dried out container and dump in half a box of white rice.  Then start putting in your random pieces of items that you’ve found around the house.  I honestly went through my junk drawer and found a ton of things that I had put up that were too small for my son to play with, they worked perfectly!  Put them in and put the lid on and shake to mix.  Dump in more rice if needed and the rest of your items.  Shake again until mixed completely.  Put your lid back on the container and you can use super glue if you want to make it completely secure.

That’s it! I saved myself about $15 by making this myself, and my 1 year old still loves it as much as the store bought one!  He will sit there for quite awhile turning it around looking for the pieces and shaking it back around to hear the fun noises!

Peach Upside Down Cake (Cast Iron Skillet)

August 18, 2013 By Micki Leave a Comment

Peach Upside Down Cake

Ingredients:

Parchment paper
4 medium peaches (about 1 1/2 lb.), unpeeled and cut into 1/3-inch-thick wedges
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice (about 1 large lemon)
1 cup cake flour
3/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1 1/4 cups granulated sugar, divided
3/4 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature and divided
1/2 cup firmly packed light brown sugar
1 tsp. Vanilla Extract
2 large eggs
1/2 cup sour cream
Sweetened whipped cream (optional)

Preparation:

Preheat oven to 350º. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. (This helps with cleanup.) Toss peaches with lemon juice. Sift together flour, baking powder, and baking soda.

Cook 1/2 cup granulated sugar in a 10-inch cast-iron skillet over medium heat, stirring occasionally with a wooden spoon, 10 minutes or until sugar melts and turns a deep amber color. Remove from heat. Immediately add 1/4 cup butter, stirring vigorously. Spread caramelized sugar to coat bottom of skillet evenly, and sprinkle with brown sugar. Arrange peach wedges in concentric circles over sugar mixture, overlapping as needed.

Beat remaining 3/4 cup granulated sugar, 1 tsp. vanilla extract and 1/2 cup butter at medium speed until smooth. Add eggs, 1 at a time, beating until blended after each addition. Add sour cream, beating until blended. Gradually add sifted flour mixture, beating at low speed just until blended and stopping to scrape bowl as needed. Spoon batter over peaches in skillet, and spread to cover. Place skillet on prepared baking sheet.

Bake at 350° for 40 to 45 minutes or until golden brown and a wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool in skillet on a wire rack 10 minutes. Run a knife around edge to loosen.

Carefully pour out any excess liquid from skillet into a measuring cup, and reserve. (It’s okay if you don’t have any excess liquid–it all depends on how juicy your fruit is.) Carefully invert cake onto a serving plate, and drizzle with any reserved liquid. Cool slightly (about 10 minutes). Cut cake into wedges using a serrated knife. Top with sweetened whipped cream, if desired, and serve immediately.

Dogs & Zucchini

Dogs & Zucchini

Did you know a GREAT, Healthy nutritious snack that most dogs LOVE is Zucchini? Cooked Zucchini, Steamed Zucchini, Raw Zucchini, Dehydrated Zucchini, the options are endless for your precious pooch!

Every 100 grams of zucchini only has 15 calories, and yet it offers a lot of nutrients such as Vitamin C and B complex, as well as magnesium, calcium, potassium and protein.

Zucchini is also good for their coat and skin, and let’s not forget the benefits to their heart!

Weight Loss or for Nutritional Benefits: Add some shredded zucchini to their food each day. I add some right to my dogs dried dog food and he gobbles it right up! (I do peel them first when shredding)

Give as a Treat: Keep some FRESH chopped up Zucchini right in the fridge for when they deserve a healthy, low fat treat. If you want their treats to last longer and through the winter, dehydrate them.

Like I said, the option’s are endless!

If you have a bit of a picky eater. Try this…

  • 2 to 3 Zucchinis
  • 2 tablespoons of a treat they like (Freeze Dried 100% meat works well)

Use a dehydrator or preheat your over to 150 degrees. Wash your zucchini and slice thin to your preference. In a Ziploc bag, put in the dog treats your dog likes, and use a rolling pin to make them into a fine powder. Put the Zucchini slices in the powdered dog treat mix and shake, shake, SHAKE! Now dehydrate or bake for 8 to 12 hours depending on how thick you have sliced them.

Design Your Own Plates!

August 16, 2013 By Micki 1 Comment

Let your child design their own plates!

Supplies Needed:

Dollar Store Plate (white – Porcelain)

Sharpie Marker (any color!) – We researched and Sharpies are in fact NON TOXIC.

Oven set at 425* for 30 minutes

I have a 3 (soon to be 4!) year old son that loves doing arts & crafts with me.  Recently we were at the dollar store and I passed by the dishware.  They have nice, white plates for only $1 each so I thought we would give this a shot!

I purchased one white plate from the Dollar Store.  Make sure it’s white so they can draw on it all over!  I’m sure you could buy ones that have color & designs on the side also!  Also make sure you have a sharpie marker.  We used plain black because that’s all my store had and I wanted to see how this worked before using colored ones.

I let my son draw whatever his little heart desired.  (I did write his name and the year on it.)  While he was working on his masterpiece, I pre-heated my oven to 425*.  When he was completely finished, I let the plate sit for about 15 minutes to allow the marker to dry completely.  After that, I stuck it in the oven for 30 minutes.  Set your kitchen timers!  When the 30 minutes is up, turn off your oven and allow your plate to sit in there and cool completely.

His finished project!

How to Remove Stubborn Carpet Stains

August 12, 2013 By Micki Leave a Comment

How to Get Those Stubborn Carpet Stains Out for GOOD!

Products Needed:
(1) Empty Spray Bottle

(1) Iron (Set on the highest setting)

(1) Bottle Vinegar

Hot Water

Mix the HOT water and vinegar (equal parts) into the spray bottle

If your house is anything like mine, carpet stains happen all the time.  They are especially frequent in my house because of my very light carpet.  Combined with a 3 year old and a 1 year old, it’s a constant battle.  I’ve been searching for the perfect carpet spot cleaner for years and I haven’t found anything that really works.  I have given up on store bought cleaners because they just don’t cut it!

Recently my 3 year old spilled a very full cup of red Kool-Aid.  Yup, right in my living room on the very light carpet. This has to be every parents nightmare because as we all know, Kool-Aid never comes out!  It was there for almost two months until I found something that worked, and I want ALL parent’s/care givers to see this! Yes, it works!

My son’s wonderful Kool-Aid stain.

As seen in the picture above, I used an empty spray bottle with a mixture of very hot water and vinegar (equal parts).  I sprayed the stain so it was soaking wet.  After that, I took a white towel (make sure it’s white, you don’t want anymore color to transfer into your carpet!) and laid on top of the stain.  Turn your iron on to the highest setting and then on top of your white and rub back and forth.  Like magic, you will see your nasty stain come right UP into the towel!

It’s a miracle! After doing this for about a half hour, it looked like this!(keep re-spraying the stain when needed, moving the towel around so you get every part of the stain)

I continued the process of spraying and ironing on the white towel until it was completely gone!  You may need more than one white towel, depending on how large your stain is!  I have now used this on other stains and it always works!
